Dear Reader
It’s time we talk about the reality of being a creative and why it matters to YOU a consumer of creations.
The Basic Basics:
At the end of the day, a true creative just wants to create. It’s like a torrential waterfall for us creatives. We just can’t NOT create. We don’t know how. Even when we think we’ve stepped away from projects, our brain is coming up with ideas on how to make some mundane ordinary thing less, well, less ordinary. So we essentially vomit creation, whether we want to or not, it’s coming. And I’ll be brief on this next subject: we HAVE to create, for our own health, otherwise it festers into a soul level infection and ails us. But I could write an entire dissertation just on that topic! So let’s keep it moving.
The Basics:
Whether you’re a creative, or a civilian, you consume creations. You do it, I do it, your neighbor does it, your grandma does it, we all do it. It’s kind of like pooping! Whether you want to do it or not, it will happen (kind of like creatives creating). And I believe it’s important to be both intentional and open-minded with your consumption pattern BECAUSE… We’re consuming thoughts, feelings, patterns, and gateways. Another thing I can write a dissertation on, but I’ll spare you!
Why does any of this matter?
Artists with mission statements. Creating for the sake of creating is our baseline functioning. It’s not extra special. So what is the real reason we create? And I’m not implying there’s some ulterior agenda that creatives have. Not at all. But I am saying that things you consume will mean more, weigh more, and affect you more if you understand WHY a creative person has created their art. Your life will change more, for less. You get better soul bang for your soul buck. You end up needing LESS therapy and start developing the ability to think more critically without someone having to tell you how. It’s actually a beautiful thing to understand why a creation is created.
And now we come back to the basic basics and my controversial opinion:
Creating for the sake of creating is NOT a real reason to create. I think it’s a good excuse for maintaining creativity, sure. But there is something deep inside us all that wants to be seen and affect people in a specific way. Some of us want the world to just be a nicer place. Some of us want the world to be a more honest place. Some of us want the world to mind its own business. And more commonly, some of us just want the world to understand.
No pressure, world.
So I’d like to propose an activity you can do on your own time. The next time you consume a creation, be it music, film, tv, comic, book, painting, etc. If you liked it, research the creator and why they made it. You can get specific to the project, or see the creatives general mission statement for creation. Whatever floats your fancy. It’s important to let your curiosity do the leading here, because once you learn, then you’ll see that project in a whole new, much more amazing light. More value, from the same thing, that’s a good investment.
I’ll start you off with my own mission statement:
“To bring forth creations into the world, whether beautiful or ugly, that invite people to feel their full spectrum of emotions, especially the dusty ones, and persuade their brains to ponder and think, to step out of their own shoes into those of another, and to attempt to understand others, even if just for a moment.”
More on that in another letter :)
Let me know what you discover about the creations you consume by hitting that reply button!
And if you’re a Creative, please hit the reply button and share your mission statement with me 😀
